Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL), or androgenetic alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss in women and tends to develop gradually over time. It’s typically linked to genetic predisposition and increased sensitivity to androgens, particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In FPHL, hair follicles become progressively smaller – a process called miniaturisation – leading to finer, shorter strands that are more prone to shedding.
This condition often runs in families and can be triggered or worsened by hormonal shifts (such as post-pregnancy or menopause), chronic stress, and underlying health conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Unlike male pattern baldness, FPHL rarely leads to total baldness but can cause noticeable thinning, especially along the parting and crown.

Over time, this causes the follicles to shrink and produce thinner, weaker hairs. The active growth phase (anagen) shortens, and more hairs enter the resting or shedding phases sooner than they should.
As a result, hair may not only fall out more frequently but also fail to regrow with the same thickness or volume. This progressive cycle is why early intervention and consistent care are key in managing FPHL effectively.
